1. Watch Out for Residential Exclusions

Many general liability policies have an exclusion that doesn't allow you to work on any type of residential building, including:

  • Single-track homes
  • Apartments
  • Single-family homes
There may also be restrictions on geographic areas and types of work that can be done.
AFA Insurance Advantage

AFA general liability policies don't include these restrictions and can give you the peace of mind and flexibility to move from commercial to residential projects on an as-needed basis.

2. Expand Your Additional Insured Coverage

General contractors and project owners require contractors to name themselves as additional insureds on their general liability policy, but many insurance carriers have tried to limit losses by excluding coverage for ongoing and completed operations for additional insureds.

AFA Insurance Advantage

AFA Insurance provides this all-important wording to give you broad coverage and keep you competitive.

3. Make Sure Your Policy Covers Everything You Do

Many policies exclude any type of work you don't list on your application, forcing companies to warrant the type of construction they do.

For example, if you complete an insurance application and state that you only handle installations, you may not be covered for any other type of work, such as design modifications to fencing.

AFA Insurance Advantage

AFA policies protect members from innocent or minor omissions that could cause a carrier to deny coverage. Because AFA brokers specialize in the fence industry, they know the type of coverage you need and cover any type of work you do.

They create policies to minimize gaps in coverage and make sure you're protected.

4. Broaden your Coverage

You don’t want to find out your coverage is too narrow after you have filed a claim. Many times, you can broaden your coverage with little or no extra cost. For example, general liability can be written with a $5 million aggregate limit, and most policies have a $0 deductible.

AFA Insurance Advantage

You can add additional coverages in your policy with minimal or no additional costs, including:

  • workers' compensation
  • commercial auto
  • property/inland marine
  • umbrella
  • employment practices liability
  • surety bonds
