IN THE PUBLIC EYE

National Wildfire Awareness Month

It’s May…When Americans start thinking about backyard barbeques, quiet evenings around a firepit, day hikes, fireworks and weekend camping trips. It isn’t a coincidence that each year the U.S. recognizes May as National Wildfire Awareness Month. This a time when individuals, organizations and communities should consider wildfire risks and take steps to prevent and mitigate the effects of fires.

In 2021, almost every state sustained wildfire damage; California alone experienced over 9,000 fires that destroyed over 2.23 million acres. The total damage and economic loss is estimated at $70 billion, with insured damage over $5 billion. The main driver of that estimate is the number and value of the structures burned as well as infrastructure damage. These losses in the global insurance market impact premiums and rates for all public sector clients—from large state property programs down to the smallest city’s program. While wildfires may not be prevalent in every state, the responsibility to be aware and alert belongs to all of us.

Nationally, almost 9 out of 10 wildfires are caused by humans. These preventable wildfires threaten lives, property and our precious natural resources. You play a valuable role in preventing wildfires and protecting our natural resources.

There are steps to take to prevent wildfires. From fire-resistant building materials to following the safety protocols for handling fire when camping, practicing vehicle and trailer maintenance when getting ready to travel, or heating your home or storing fuel, we can all take part in reducing wildfires.
