August Fun Facts!

  • August was named to honor the first Roman Emperor (and grandnephew of Julius Caesar), Augustus Caesar (63 BC - AD 14)
  • August 1-7:  International Clown Week—recognizes the efforts clowns across the world put in to make people laugh…or for me, nightmares…just saying.  On August 2, 1971, Richard Nixon, President of the United States, proclaimed August 1-7 as National Clown Week.  Isn’t that ironic
  • August 13:  International Left-Handers Day—only 10% of the population is left-handed.  If you lefties feel excluded, forgotten or even mistreated year-round due to left-handedness, August 13th is the RIGHT (haha) day to celebrate being a lefty!  Not only do lefties have to deal with scissors, mugs, can openers, and other right-handed implements, they have to worry about sinistrophobia!  What’s that?  The fear of left-handedness or things on the left side.  Who knew?
  • August 26:  Women’s Equality Day, celebrating the 1920 ratification of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote in the US. On August 26, 1920, a proclamation was signed behind closed doors, ending the struggle for the vote that started over 100 years earlier.
