IN THE PUBLIC EYE

Louisiana PRIMA’s 37th Annual Fall Conference Overview

Author: Rick Pray, Alliant

Alliant is a proud Sponsor for Louisiana PRIMA’s 37th Annual Fall Conference in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on December 8-9, 2022. Rick Pray, Alliant Public Entity Group, attended the conference.

Attendees from across the state participated in numerous sessions around current public sector risk management concerns including responding to active shooters, the opioid epidemic, the realities of an aging workforce, and managing invisible injuries and mental health in the workplace.

The most discussed presentations were the active shooter and opioid epidemic presentations. The big take aways based on feedback from conference attendees follows:

  1. School districts and offices need to be engaged in frequent (monthly) and current training programs for active shooter situations. Louisiana schools have adopted the ALICE method which prepares staff and students to respond to active shooters.

  2. Over the last 10 years, the nation has seen its deadliest drug epidemic ever due to the rise in unregulated sources of fentanyl/opioid use. Many deaths are first time users who were unaware of the substance they took.

Alliant believes continued education is critical in today’s risk management environment and sponsored a scholarship for one attendee, chosen by the Louisiana PRIMA board. We were also on hand to celebrate the retirement of the outgoing board president and to welcome in the new board.
